Not every place that sells old wood is a true reclaimed-lumber supplier. If you're sourcing reclaimed lumber in Arkansas — whether you're a contractor on a deadline or a DIYer chasing the perfect accent wall — here's what actually matters when you choose where to buy.
1. Real inventory, on site
A photo on a website isn't inventory. Ask how much wood is actually on hand and whether you can see it. The depth of stock determines whether you can match a species across a whole project or get stuck waiting on the next salvage haul.
At our Little Rock yard we keep a million board feet on site — sorted and ready to walk through.
2. An on-site mill
This is the big one. A supplier with its own mill can cut your wood to your exact spec — rough-cut to sawn smooth, live-edge to tongue-and-groove — while you wait. A reseller without a mill can only sell you what's already cut. On-site milling is the difference between "here's what we have" and "here's exactly what you need."
3. Species selection
Good reclaimed suppliers can tell you what each board is and offer a real range. Look for variety like:
- Cedar, cypress, and red gum
- White oak, red oak, and mixed hardwood
- Maple, mahogany, and walnut
The species affects the look, the workability, and the price — so selection matters.
4. Cut-to-spec and finishing
Can they deliver the board the way your project needs it? The best suppliers handle live-edge, planks, slabs, tongue-and-groove, rough-cut, and sawn-smooth, with finishes from flat to glazed. That saves you a second trip to a mill or a finisher.
5. They'll talk through your project
Reclaimed wood is not a commodity — every board is different. A supplier worth buying from will help you pick the right species and cut for a mantel versus a floor versus a table, not just point you at a pile.
